What we offer

With the Waelz SDHL process, as well as the SAF and plasma processes, Befesa Servicios de Reciclaje de Acero Dust exclusively uses processes recognized as the best available technology.

Safety in hazardous
residues management

The treatment of hazardous waste must fulfil very rigorous requirements with respect to the technology employed and environmentally safe operation. Befesa Steel Dust Recycling Services offers custom-tailored services to meet specific needs and minimizing the risks of the clients regarding all issues of residue treatment.

Leading recycling
technology

The environmental requirements placed on the steel industry have increased and Befesa Steel Dust Recycling Services is therefore continually improving, developing and modifying its treatment technologies in order to meet market and regulatory demands.

Operational
excellence

As a leading company in the market, Befesa Steel Dust Recycling Services ensures a maximum of quality, service as well as innovation. We are committed to long standing customer relationships, aiming at the same time as an innovation leader in the market.

Services

Befesa Steel Dust Recycling Services offers you professional and trustworthy services for recycling waste. We offer our clients individualized logistics, consulting and recycling services in accordance with the highest environmental and quality standards.

EAF dust (ELECTRIC ARC FURNACE)

Today, the recycling of scrap steel is of great importance, thereby reducing the extraction of crude steel, preserving natural sources and thus protecting the environment. Approximately 40% of the steel produced in Europe comes from steel scrap recycled through the electric arc furnace process (EAF process). The gases emitted during the process are treated and cleaned, collecting 15 to 20 kg of dust per ton of steel produced. Of the annual production in Europe of EAF powder thus obtained, which contains zinc, approximately 70% is recycled in the Waelz process.

The SDHL Waelz process, – patented -, is the result of continuous improvement carried out within the organization, through innovation and optimization of the classic Waelz process. Especially in food preparation, recovery rates and optimization of energy consumption.

The recycling processes carried out at Befesa Steel Dust Recycling Services are considered the best available technologies (“Best Available -Technique” (BAT)), as stated in the reference BREF “Reference Document on Best Available Techniques in the Non-Ferrous Metals Industries ”, developed at the request of the European Commission.

In addition, this process has important environmental benefits, since on the one hand the discharge of this type of dust is avoided and on the other hand, the amount of primary zinc extracted from mining is reduced.

Thanks to the Befesa Steel Dust Recycling Services activity, more than 650 thousand tons of raw EAF dust, stainless steel dust and other types of zinc-containing waste are recycled per year. Since 2012, Befesa Steel Dust Recycling Services has operated a washing plant in northern France, which further improves the quality of the Waelz oxide.

Circular Alloys

When producing stainless steel by electric arc furnace or other metallurgical processes – filter dust, mill scales and others residues, containing a number of valuable but hazardous elements are generated as a residue.

The recycling services of EAF Dust from stainless steel production and residues containing nickel, chromium and molybdenum from other sources is performed at two locations in Europe. The technologies applied are the submerged arc reduction smelting at Befesa Valera S.A.S., Gravelines (France) and the plasma reduction smelting at Befesa ScanDust AB, Landskrona (Sweden).

More than 150 thousand tons of these residues can be serviced and processed per year at Befesa, protecting the environment from hazardous dust by recovering the metals and re-feeding them into the production process so that new, high quality stainless steel can be produced.

Befesa Steel Dust Services is therefore a strategic, reliable partner of the European and global stainless-steel makers for the treatment of their residues.

Galvanization residues

Galvanization residues are serviced at two production sites of Befesa., located in the region of Bilbao. The residues are remelted to metallic zinc or processed in the American or French process to zinc oxide.

Their yearly throughput ranges between approx. 10-12 thousand tons of galvanisation residues in total.

Refining

Befesa acquired in September 2022 a leading producer of special high-grade zinc. Our zinc refining plant is the only one in the world that produces zinc solely from recycled sources.

The facility, which is designed to produce Special High Grade (SHG) zinc and alloys like CCG (Continuous Galvanizing Grade Zinc) using recycled EAF steel mill dust, is expected to produce 155,000 tons of SHG zinc annually.

During the zinc refining process, it generates co-products like Lead-Silver Carbonate (sold as a lead concentrate), Gypsum (a fine-grained soft sulfate mineral composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate) and Cadmium Concentrate (its primary use is in the production of nickel-cadmium batteries).

Zinc products are used in common products including galvanizing steel for automobiles, various infrastructure applications, die cast components for appliances and toys. Zinc is also added to soil, vitamin supplements and sunscreen for its health improvement properties.

Logistics

A closed logistic chain is the key to an optimal material supply. Befesa Steel Dust Recycling Services offers its customers efficient, flexible and tailor-made solutions and concepts.

These logistic concepts are focused on national and international transportation services for industrial residues, especially dusts, sludge’s and slag’s. The integrated logistic infrastructure of Befesa provides a reliable removal of residues, a continuous supply of Befesa’s operational sub-units as well as the marketing and the delivery of the recovered products of these sub-units. These services are also available to external customers outside the Befesa group.

Wherever viable, Befesa Steel Dust Recycling Services relies on the railway system as an environment-friendly transport system. The company has its own railcars that are adapted to the product handling and the specific loading and unloading circumstances.

If necessary combined transports are executed by purpose-built containers for rail and road transports. Trucks are used only for the up- and downstream short-distance connecting transports.

Administrative services

Metal-containing residues are typically classified as a hazardous waste. The recovery of these residues and the transport from the place of generation (i. e. the steel or stainless-steel plant) to the recovery facility is strictly regulated and monitored by National-, EU- and International Legislations and Regulations. Befesa Steel Dust Recycling Services offers to its customers a comprehensive support in applying for the necessary permits (notifications) to transport hazardous waste. This service comprises the preparation of the associated documents, the contact with the authorities and the monitoring of the procedures. Thanks to many years of experience, Befesa Steel Dust Recycling Servicesis known to the authorities as a professional and reliable partner, applying the highest environmental and quality standards.

Advisory services

Residues are a challenge in steel and stainless-steel industry.

The Service and Logistic teams at Befesa handle all requests and needs with great care and immediate attention.

By its presence in the major European centers of steel and stainless steel making, Befesa is the partner for the industry offering reliable residue management processes, competent commercial activity and flexible logistic concepts including necessary permits (notification procedure).

Technologies

With the Waelz SDHL process, as well as the SAF and plasma processes, Befesa Servicios de Reciclaje de Acero Dust exclusively uses processes recognized as the best available technology.

The SDHL-Waelz process

Today, the recycling of steel scrap is as important as obtaining raw or primary steel, in order to preserve natural sources and protect the environment. Our customers use electric arc furnaces to recycle steel scrap to produce steel. In this process a hazardous waste called “steel dust” is generated. Befesa manages and recycles this hazardous waste.

Find out more

The plasma process

Stainless steel milling powder, flakes and other production residues containing chromium and nickel are transported in specially designed containers and big bags by ship, train or truck. This makes it possible to transport the powder without risk of damaging the environment.

The submerged arc furnace process

Stainless steel grinding powder, flakes and other production residues containing chromium and nickel are shipped in containers and big bags by ship, train or truck, to intermediate storage. This makes it possible to transport the powder without risk of damaging the environment.
