Befesa Aluminium Salt Slags Recycling Services, works for sustainable development and the satisfaction of all stakeholders through excellence in management. This excellence is achieved, among other things, through continuous investments in research, development and innovation, not only by adapting our equipment and processes to the best available technologies, but also by participating in the development of those best technologies, thus guaranteeing a more sustainable future.

Befesa believes in the circular economy, developing processes that, on the one hand, do not generate waste, and on the other hand, reintroduce secondary raw materials into industrial activity, reducing the need for non-renewable natural resources.

Likewise, it is necessary to optimize the management of our resources, including human resources, which are essential for Befesa, guaranteeing their safety, through integrated management systems focused on the prevention and control of risks. These management systems are based on the active participation of all our employees.

Befesa Servicios de Recycling of aluminium scrap, uses state-of-the-art furnaces and reduced waste generation (salt slag) for the production of aluminium alloys.

Leading recycling technology

The technology developed by Befesa guarantees the integral recycling of aluminium waste, not generating solid waste and therefore, without the need for landfills at the end of the life. This is achieved through two cycles, in the first of which the aluminium contained in the waste is recovered, producing aluminium alloys, and in the second, recycling of salt slags, the waste that was traditionally discarded in landfills is recovered, transforming them into secondary raw materials, useful in different industrial sectors.

The full SPL recovery process (cut 1 and cut 2) is unique in the world and represents an innovative contribution to the sustainability of the aluminium industry as a whole. These residues, once treated in our plants, give rise to valuable by-products in multiple industrial processes.

Befesa’s recycling and recovery processes have been considered within the BREF documents of the European Commission, which includes the best available technologies (BAT).

The Technology and Machinery department takes advantage of the practical knowledge obtained during more than 50 years of history, to develop and adapt equipment to the needs of the metal aluminium industry (aluminium, zinc, lead, etc …). Among the most common products, there are melting furnaces, casting lines, coolers, transport systems, pre-treatment (grinding and classification) of aluminium scrap and slag, etc.

Services

Befesa provides innovative and sustainable technological services for the aluminium recycling industry.

Salt Slag Recycling 

Aluminium concentrates, aluminium oxide and salt fluxes obtained through the recycling of Salt Slag, SPL and other aluminium residues.

 

Through a five-stage process:

  • Hazardous waste service, collection and transportation
  • Grinding and granulometric classification of the waste received
  • Reaction of dangerous components, and dissolution of salts
  • Separation, washing and obtention of inert products
  • Crystallization of salts

The products obtained are:

  • Metal concentrates ready to be used as raw material in foundries
  • Metallic oxides, ready to be used as a source of aluminium oxide in different industrial activities
  • Salts that can be used as fluxes in metallurgical processes or as agricultural fertilizers



The phases of the production process are:

  • Grinding: The purpose of this treatment is, on the one hand, the extraction of metallic aluminium, and, on the other, the reduction of the particle size to an optimum that ensures a perfect reaction of the dangerous components and a dissolution of the salts contained
  • Dissolution-Reaction: The material (powder) obtained from the grinding is mixed with water to dissolve the salts. The dissolution is carried out with part of the condensates from crystallization and with the filtrate of the alumina concentrate
  • Crystallization: To separate the salts from the water contained in the brine obtained in the previous phase, we proceed with the evaporation and subsequent condensation of the vapors. In this way a salt is obtained, a mixture of NaCl and KCl and some condensates that are reused in the process

Aluminium Recycling 

Production of aluminium alloys from the recycling of aluminium scraps, drosses and other aluminium residues.

Befesa services, collects, transports, recycles, recoveries and revaluates different kind of residue that are produced by the aluminium industry. We manufacture a wide range of aluminium alloys with various specifications, for use in the casting industry to produce molded components. These components are used in the automobile industry, in the manufacture of household appliances, with in the construction industry, etc.

The production capacity of alloys is approximately of 200,000 t per year. We recycle aluminium using tilting rotary furnaces and holding furnaces. The casting lines are automated, along with the stack and strapping systems. We also deliver liquid aluminium in specially designed containers. Most of the technology used in our facilities were developed, designed and manufactured by our in house technology department.

Technology and Machinery 

Bespoke design and manufacture of various equipment, providing technological solutions for the aluminium, lead and zinc industry.

Befesa Aluminium, designs, constructs, assembles and starts up the facilities so they are ready for use, in the aluminium, zinc and lead cast houses. This department has been working since the 1970s and has a broad list of references of over 150 Installations in over 40 countries. Practical experience in casting comes from Befesa own casthouses.

The main products are:

  • Ingot Casting machines for the manufacturing of ingots with average weight of 5-25 Kg. Befesa is leader in this type of installations for the aluminium market. With options of robotic ingot skimming, ingot marking, stencilling, automatic strapping, label applicators, launders, CFF degassing…
  • Zinc slab casting machines with same options as mentioned above for aluminium ingot casting line
  • Zinc jumbo casting machine
  • Lead pig ingot casting machines
  • Casting wheels for ingot casting lines and tundish for zinc slab casting line
  • Crucible skimming automatic, robot based
  • Liquid aluminium treatment at crucible for the removal of Alkali contents in the coming liquid metal from the smelter pot room
  • Salt slag cooling system. This process is the only effective to cool the highly reactive salt slags from tilting rotary furnaces
  • Dross cooling systems
  • Facilities for slag treatments. Befesa has developed a process to enrich slags with a minimal loss of metal. The dross milling plant process recovers the metal part and only mills the non-metal part.

The certifications are international recognised norms that are based on international standards such as International Standard Organisation (ISO), the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS), Eco Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). The environmental solutions provided for the greenhouse gases measurements are also externally certified following ISO 14064 standards. Befesa is concerned with the energy efficiency of its services and is also committed to reduce the environmental impact due to energy consumption and to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions; therefore, Befesa is certified externally according to ISO 50001 as well.
