Befesa opens a call for entries to the Third Environmental Journalism Award, to be awarded in Huelva, Spain, June 2016

  • The Huelva Press Association and Andalusian College of Professional Journalists will form part of the expert jury

Huelva, February 5 2016. Befesa has invited entries for the Third Environmental Journalism Award, which is named after the company dedicated to industrial waste management. The purpose of the prize, which will be handed over in Huelva in June of this year, is to recognise the most outstanding piece of journalism covering environmental issues published in any national or international media. The award includes a sum of €2,000 for the winner. The Huelva Press Association (Asociación de la Prensa de Huelva, APH) and the Andalusian College of Professional Journalists ((Colegio Profesional de Periodistas de Andalucía, CPPA) are to collaborate with this initiative by forming part of the jury.

Articles published in 2015 via any type of medium (the press, radio, TV or digital) are eligible for entry to the third edition of the award. The journalistic piece can deal with any subject that is related to the environment. The jury will be formed exclusively by journalists. The closing date for entries is May 13 2016.

The aim of this award is to transmit a message of support to professional journalists everywhere, at a time of particular difficulty for the media in general due to numerous closures and redundancies. Huelva has been chosen for the award ceremony because of Befesa's identification with the province – Befesa operates the Industrial Waste Centre in Nerva.

The first edition of the prize was awarded to the TV documentary "Gas deposits in Doñana", broadcast by Televisión Española and produced by Alejandra Muñoz Jiménez (editor) and Rafael López de la Cruz (camera person). Additionally, a special mention was made of an article entitled "El coche eléctrico, en punto muerto” (The electric car, stalemate/a neutral point), published in El País newspaper and presented by Elena Sevillano.

The second edition was awarded to the TV program "75 Minutos” (75 minutes) produced by Canal Sur TV. The jury recognised two documentaries called “A la basura” (In the rubbish) and “Chatarra” (Scrap), both created by Producciones Cibeles, S.L. for the said informative program broadcast on Andalusia's autonomous television channel. Furthermore, a special mention was given to the article on La Sexta Noticias titled “La huella ecológica” (The ecological footprint) and presented by Roberto Martín.

The Third Befesa Environmental Journalism Award ceremony will take place in Casa Colón, Huelva, with political authorities and figureheads from the world of business and media in attendance.
