Befesa convenes the II Prize for Environmental Journalism, to be awarded in Huelva in June

Huelva, 5 November 2014. Befesa has convened the II Prize for Environmental Journalism, which carries the name of the company dedicated to industrial waste management. The award, which will be presented in Huelva next June, is designed to recognise the best piece of journalism on environmental themes published in any national or international media. The prize carries a financial reward of 2,000 Euros. The Press Association of Huelva (APH) and the Andalucía College of Journalism (CPPA) are collaborating with this initiative and form part of the judging panel.

For this second year of the prize, submissions will be accepted for work published during 2014 in any medium of communication (press, radio, TV and digital). The journalistic works can deal with any theme related to the environment. The jury will consist exclusively of journalists. The submission period for entries runs from next Monday, 10 November to 11 May 2015.

This prize aims to send a message of support to the journalistic profession at a particularly difficult time for the media, which is experiencing many closures and redundancies. Huelva was chosen as the venue for the prize due to the close connection that Befesa has with this province, where it operates the Nerva Industrial Waste Centre.

The first winner of the award was the report entitled “Gas deposits in Doñana”, broadcast by Televisión Española and produced by Alejandra Muñoz Jiménez (Editor) and Rafael López de la Cruz (Camera). A special mention was also given to the article entitled “The electric car at a standstill”, published in the newspaper El País, submitted by Elena Sevillano. The President of Befesa, Javier Molina, was charged with handing over the award at a ceremony held at Casa Colón in Huelva, which was attended by political authorities and representatives of the business world and the media.
