Befesa awarded the contract to modernise the Canal de Estremera

Madrid, 27 October 2009. Sociedad Estatal Aguas de la Cuenca del Tajo of the Spanish Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs has awarded Befesa, in a joint venture with ACSA Obras e Infraestructuras, the contract to modernise the irrigable area of the Canal de Estremera Irrigation Association, worth more than €15 million.

The Canal de Estremera runs through the provinces of Guadalajara, Madrid and Toledo. An extensive area of workable land with a border irrigation system lies along the path of the canal. The awarded project will allow this system to be replaced by a pressure system, using drip or spray methods, which would reduce water loss and provide greater control over water use for different sites, as well as a greater diversity of crops and yields. The project aims to generate savings of 10 cubic hectometres per year of quality water, which could also be used for supplying urban areas.

The awarded works include the creation of four outlets in the Canal de Estremera; an important network of pipes equipped with control elements; as well as the flow regulation and pressure elements required for the correct functioning of the network.

This modernisation project, co-financed by Aguas de la Cuenca del Tajo, the Community of Madrid and the irrigation association itself, will benefit more than 2,000 hectares in the municipalities of Driebes, Almoguera, Estremera, Fuentidueña de Tajo, Villamanrique de Tajo, Villarejo de Salvanés and Villarrubia de Santiago, the majority of which are located in the autonomous region of Madrid.

Javier Molina, Chairman of Befesa, said, "This award is a continuation of Befesa's participation in the Ministry's A.G.U.A. program, which aims to guarantee the availability and quality of the water in Spain".

Befesa, the environmental services subsidiary of Abengoa, focuses on providing environmental services to industry and the construction of environmental infrastructures. It is a public listed company with a market capitalisation in excess of €325 million (close 2008). (www.befesa.com).
