Befesa opens new R&D+i technology centre for waste recycling and water treatment and desalination

Seville, 19 October 2009. The regional minister of the environment of the government of Andalusia, Cinta Castillo, today opened the R&D+i centre that Befesa has built in the town of Dos Hermanas, which aims to become an international leader for the development of new technologies for treating water and the management of industrial waste. The event was also attended by Basilia Sanz Murillo, vicemayor of Dos Hermanas, and the Chairman of Befesa, Javier Molina.

The new centre is a reflection of Befesa's dedication and commitment to research, development and innovation and is a key element for making Befesa a technological leader in the treatment of water, especially desalination and reuse, and for waste recycling. The 70 researchers at the centre will have the latest scientific and technological resources at their disposal.

The centre has more than 3,000 square metres, which are divided across two floors housing laboratories (analysis and classification), an experimental zone, a workshop area and a control zone, as well as offices, a multi-use room with capacity for more than 100 people and a visitor exhibition area.

The centre has been designed following sustainable architecture guidelines and it incorporates various measures that make it a benchmark for environmental management excellence, including the use of recycled resources and materials, control systems for energy savings, a solar energy system and reduced water consumption systems, among others.

During the inauguration, Javier Molina, Chairman of Befesa, drew attention to Befesa's "ambitious strategic R&D+i plan, which aims to improve and optimise the technologies currently used in recycling industrial waste and in the production of water, improving their efficiency in terms of cost, energy consumption and CO2 emissions, as well as developing new technologies that create alternatives for the future". He added that "this centre is the culmination of many efforts and represents a very important milestone in Befesa's history, which from today will have its own cutting-edge infrastructure for concentrating its R&D+i efforts".

It is worth noting that in 2008, Befesa invested more than €4.0 million in R&D+i.

Befesa, the environmental services subsidiary of Abengoa, focuses on providing environmental services to industry and the construction of environmental infrastructures. It is a public listed company with a market capitalisation in excess of €325 million (close 2008). (www.befesa.com).
