Befesa awarded the water supply enhancement works contract for the city of Caceres

The Ministry of Environment, through the Directorate General for Water, has awarded Befesa, in joint venture with the company Construcciones Sanchez Dominguez (Sando), the water supply enhancement project for the city of Caceres, from Portaje reservoir. The investment is more than 40.4 million euro and the aim of the project is to meet the supply needs of an additional 150,000 inhabitants of Caceres and 13 other municipalities in the province.

The city of Caceres and numerous nearby municipalities currently receive their water supply from three different sources: the 19.2 cubic hectometer capacity Guadiloba reservoir; the contribution from the 13.3 cubic hectometer catchment basin; and by pumping from the river Almonte. These volumes are not sufficient to cover the needs of the population they supply.

In order to avail of an additional water supply source under an acceptable environmental impact framework, two mains will be built: one from Portaje reservoir, on the Fresnedosa Rivera, to Guadiloba reservoir and the other will be a reloading pipeline to provide Portaje reservoir with a supplementary water supply from Gabriel y Galan reservoir.

The works comprise the construction of 3 pumping stations and more than 65 kilometers of mains with diameters between 1,000 and 1,200 millimeters, designed to transport a maximum flow of 1,500 meters per second.

According to Befesa’s chairman and chief executive officer, Javier Molina, "Thanks to this project the water supply to the city of Caceres and nearby municipalities will be definitively assured while, at the same time, the company continues to conduct a series of activities it is developing with a view to integral water management enhancement".
