Today, the central hall of the University of Seville was the scenario for the presentation to the Doctor in Chemical Engineering, Carlos Leiva, of the 3,000 euro prize the University of Seville and the company Befesa, Abengoa’s environmental services subsidiary, award for the best Doctoral Thesis on Environmental Subjects.

The prize-giving ceremony was chaired by the rector of the University of Seville, Miguel Florencia, who was accompanied by the councilor for the Environment of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Fuensanta Coves, and by Befesa’s chairman, Javier Molina.

Carlos Leiva has been awarded the Prize for his work entitled "Development and technical specifications for fireproof products manufactured from industrial waste for use as separation elements".

The Befesa Prize is awarded in recognition of the best technological research work that constitutes a doctoral thesis in the University of Seville on a subject related to environmental protection and recovery.

Furthermore, this prize recognizes research, development and innovation work and, above all, the researchers that, during their professional career, opt to continue their training beyond university studies and play a crucial role on the road to sustainable development.

Following the presentation of the prize, the councilor for the Environment of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Fuensanta Coves, gave the conference entitled "Climate change: a challenge beyond the merely environmental".

This prize focuses on those whose doctoral theses have been defended in the University of Seville during the 2003/04, 2004/05 and 2005/06 academic years, and which have been classified as Excellent Cum Laude.

For assessing the entries, the Assessment Committee has taken scientific and academic criteria, such as publications associated with the thesis, presentations at conferences, incidence thereof in the scientific community and stays in other academic institutions for reasons associated with the thesis into consideration.

In addition, other merits such as the conditioning of the thesis to the objective of the competition, the technological novelty of the research work or the possible application, in the short term, of said work in the industrial sector have also been evaluated.

With these types of initiatives, Befesa promotes the incorporation of doctors in its R&D&I departments and assists them in gaining more in-depth knowledge of the qualities and works of the Doctors that have entered for the Prize and, thereby, opens up new possibilities for them in their future professional careers.
