Befesa announces the winner of the Befesa Prize for the Best Doctoral Thesis on Environmental Themes from the University of Seville

Last December, the Assessment Committee for the Befesa Prize for the Best Doctoral Thesis on Environmental Themes, formed by representatives from the University of Seville and Befesa, met to assess the seven doctoral theses that were entered for the competition. Following the review thereof, and taking the criteria established in the competition rules into consideration, the Befesa Prize was awarded by unanimous decision of all the committee members to the research work presented by the doctor of Chemical Engineering, Carlos Leiva Fernandez, entitled “Development and technical specifications for fireproof products manufactured from industrial wastes for use as construction separation elements”.

Given that one of the bases of Befesa’s activity is Innovation, this year Befesa wished to reward the Best Doctoral Thesis on Environmental Themes written by an individual at the University of Seville. The objective of the prize is to reward technological research work on a theme that is very closely linked to protection and recovery of the environment, and related to one of the following: rational use of natural resources; treatment of all types of raw materials and of solid, liquid or gaseous wastes of urban or industrial origin, including the recycling, recovery and disposal thereof; prevention, treatment, control and elimination of emissions, discharges and solid, liquid or gaseous wastes of industrial or urban origin; procedures and installations related to the aforementioned activities, as well as their operation, including engineering, infrastructure construction, management, environmental and proprietorship aspects.

The panel of judges was formed by: Luis Onieva Jimenez, Vice-president for Technological Transfer; Saturio Ramos Vicente, Vice-president for Research; Pedro Ollero de Castro, Lecturer in Chemical Engineering; Jose Manuel Benitez Fernandez, Head of Befesa Gestión de Residuos Industriales’s R&D&I Dept.; Inmaculada Salcedo Davila, Coordinator of Befesa Construcción y Tecnología Ambiental’s R&D&I; Javier Molina Montes, Chairman of Befesa; and Arturo Buenaventura Pouyfaçon, Manager of Befesa Construcción y Tecnología Ambiental’s R&D&I Dept.
