Befesa Plásticos - Agreement with the Union of Agricultural Co-ops of Extremadura (Unexca)

Befesa Plásticos has signed a Collaboration Agreement with Unexca to provide collection, management and recycling services for the agricultural plastic waste generated by its associated agricultural co-ops.

Unexca represents 280 co-ops throughout Extremadura, with a total of 30,000 farmers and ranchers involved in extremely important activity sectors in the region such as cereal farming, viticulture, sheep and goat farming, fruit and vegetable growing, oil and table olive production, and tobacco production, among others.

The aim is to solve the co-ops’ current problem with the removal of plastic material and consolidate the contribution to and respect for the environment, within ecoconditionality parameters and requirements, of the agricultural and livestock sectors in the region.

Pursuant to this agreement, Befesa will conduct the integral management of the wastes for the Unexca member co-ops. In return, the cooperative organization has undertaken to provide Befesa Plásticos with all the wastes from the agricultural operators that sign the agreement. The most highly generated plastic waste is irrigation tape utilized for tomato growing, which is estimated at around 800 T/year.

The first collection service was provided on November 22 for the “Amalia Sajonia” co-op, in Santa Amalia (Badajoz), and was overseen by members of the Regional Government of Andalusia such as, Jose Luis Quintana, Councilor for Agriculture and the Environment, and Guillermo Crespo, Director General for the Environment. Unexca was represented by Cristina de Toro Navero, Manager, and by Manuel Rodriguez Corrales, President of the Supplies Sector. Befesa Plásticos was represented by Manuel Roca, and Antonio Puig.
