Befesa participates in the World Congress on Desalination and Water Reuse in Singapore

The bi-annual World Congress on Desalination and Water Reuse was held last September, in Singapore.

This event clearly demonstrated the growth this market niche has experienced in the water treatment sector. Past levels of attendance were surpassed and the degree of participation, through both conference papers and numbers attending the conferences themselves (not only contractors and suppliers, but bankers, engineering firms, market advisors, developers and customers that are developing their own projects, from China to the USA) also rose sharply.

Befesa, given its leading position in the market, participated very actively for the first time with its own stand. Of the last seven international contracts awarded, Befesa has been awarded four, which means it now has a contract portfolio for the construction of seawater desalination plants in India and Algeria over the next three years with an overall 500,000 m3/day production capacity. The plants will also be operated over 25-years under the concession modality.

In addition, upon it participating in future projects in California, China, Oman, Morocco, or Tunisia, Befesa used the occasion to discuss the projects with the organizations and companies that are involved.

Another important matter is Spain’s role in this sector. The presence of Spanish companies and the important references held for plants in operation for many decades now have led the international market to consider Spain to be the leading power worldwide in Desalination and Water Reuse. Proof thereof is the recent election of the President of the "International Desalination Association": Spain’s Jose Antonio medina, president of the Spanish section. In addition, the next congress will be held on the Canary Islands, in 2007.

Befesa Contrucción y Tecnología Ambiental has established an ambitious International Development Plan included in its strategic plan, which is progressing very successfully over the past few months. It has a young, yet experienced workforce, and the financing tools available to Abengoa, to enable it to compete successfully in the Market, as can be seen by the new contracts it has been awarded.
