 2017

  • In March 2017 Befesa closed the sale of 100 % of its industrial residue management business in Latin America – Befesa Perú and Befesa Chile –, as well as 100% of its chemical cleaning business – Solarca and its subsidiaries – to Séché Environnement, one of France's leading players in the recovery and treatment of all types of waste. Befesa Perú, Befesa Chile and Solarca were part of the Industrial Environmental Solutions (IES) business unit of Befesa.
  • This sale, together with the sale of Befesa Gestión de Residuos Industriales (BGRI) and Befesa Plásticos carried out last December 2016 as well as the sale of Befesa Colombia, completes the divestment of Befesa’s non-core Industrial Environmental Services (IES) business unit, to focus on our core services the recycling of hazardous residues in the steel and aluminium industries, and consolidate our leading position in the markets in which we currently operate as well as to grow in new markets where opportunities present themselves
  • During 2017 we have focused on the implementation of the “Be Safe” project’s road map across the entire organization to strengthen the cultural change in the company towards ZERO incidents with the goal of becoming a reference organization in safety performance. Amongst the main actions being carried out are the Safety Leadership training programs for middle management, the implementation of a Safety Observations program, as well as Life Saving rules across the entire organization

 

2016

  • In February 2016, Befesa finalized the ramp-up of its new secondary aluminum plant in Bernburg (Germany), running the plant at full capacity and producing around 70,000 tons of secondary aluminum serving the European automotive components manufacturing industry.
  • In May 2016, Befesa awarded its 3rd Befesa Environmental Journalism Award to Carlos Prada. The panel evaluated a series of environmental reports prepared by  journalists. Befesa organizes this annual award in order to recognize the best works in the field of environmental journalism.
  • In June 2016, Befesa held its 2nd global Health & Safety Summit to continue the cultural change in the company towards ZERO incidents with the goal of becoming a reference organization in safety performance.
  • In July 2016, Befesa completed the refinancing of the non-Steel Dust Services business loan which includes the Aluminum, Salt Slag & SPL Services businesses. The financing was signed with the same syndicated banks that had provided the original loan and the new loan terms provided better conditions and more flexibility to Befesa.
  • In July 2016, Befesa acquired the remaining 20% stake in its steel dust recycling plant in South Korea. With this final installment Befesa now owns 100% of the operations.
  • In December 2016, Befesa closed the sale of 100 % of its industrial residue management business in Spain - Befesa Gestión de Residuos Industriales (BGRI) to Ditecsa, a company with more than 20 years of experience in engineering, operation and maintenance of complex industrial projects. BGRI was part of the Industrial Environmental Solutions (IES) business unit of Befesa.
  • In December 2016 Befesa closed the sale of 100 % of its plastics recycling business - Befesa Plásticos - to GWE Plastics, a Spanish company specialized in the manufacturing of plastic compounds from the recycling of used plastics. Befesa Plásticos was part of the Industrial Environmental Solutions (IES) business unit of Befesa.

2015

  • In October 2015, Befesa Zinc Korea finalised the construction and commissioning of their second waelz kiln plant, converting it into the largest steel dust recycling plant, with an annual treatment capacity of 220,000 t.
  • In December 2015, Befesa sold 100% of the shares of Befesa Valorización de Azufre, S.L.U. plant (sulphur valorisation) to INEOS Enterprises.

2014

  • Work begins on expanding the Befesa plant in Korea with a second kiln, doubling the capacity.
  • 3rd of December, Inauguration of the secondary aluminium recycling services plant in Bernburg (Germany).

2013

  • Sale of Befesa to the investment fund Triton Partners.
  • Befesa issues PIK bonds at a value of 150 M€.
  • Befesa, supported by Triton and with an investment of 31 M€, begins the construction of a secondary aluminium recycling plant in Bernburg (Germany).

2012

  • Acquisition of the Korean Hankook R&M, which provides steel dust recycling services. The company begins construction of a plant in the city of Gyeongju (South Korea).
  • Inauguration of the new Waelz Oxide (WOX) washing plant in Gravelines (France) with a capacity to wash 100,000 t of WOX.
  • Inauguration of the new Befesa sulphur recovery plant in the Autonomous Port of Bilbao, with the capacity to treat 120,000 t of sulphur.

2011

  • Sale of the water EPC to Abengoa.
  • Befesa Steel Dust Recycling Services carries out a €300 million high-yield bond issue, which enables the company to repay the debt from the BUS acquisition as well as financing the future growth of the Steel Dust Recycling Services company.
  • Befesa is delisted from the stock market due to a takeover by Abengoa.
  • Acquisition of the interest that Qualitas Venture Capital has in Befesa, (Befesa Reciclaje de Residuos de Aluminio). Once the deal is signed Befesa has a 98.25% stake in the company.

2010

  • Befesa enters the Turkish steel dust recycling services market after acquiring a 51% stake in the company owned by the Canadian firm Silvermet Inc. in Iskenderun (Turkey).

2008

  • Befesa successfully completes the integration of Aluminio Catalán (Alcasa) and Befesa Reciclaje de Residuos de Aluminio, part of Qualitas, originally agreed in 2007. The resulting company is a leading service provider in the European market.

2006

  • Befesa acquires the BUS AB group (one of the founding shareholders of Befesa), which carries out two types of activities: recycling services for steel dusts from electric arc and foundry furnaces, and recycling services for stainless steel dusts.

2000

  • 90.52 % of shares in Befesa are acquired by Abengoa, integrating the environmental services of Abengoa into Befesa.

1999

  • Befesa grows in terms of value and strategic importance, which enable it to list successfully on the stock market.

1993

  • Befesa Medio Ambiente is incorporated by the companies Berzelius Umwelt Service (BUS), Duro Felguera and Indumetal, which group their environmental assets in Spain into Befesa.
