Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food opens the El Carlet irrigation modernisation works awarded to Befesa

The irrigation modernisation works of the Acaquía Común de Carlet irrigation association in Valencia that were awarded to Befesa in 2004 were opened on 4 October.

Francisco Rodriguez Mulero, Chairman of Seiasa de la Meseta Sur, Mª Angeles Crespo Martínez, Mayoress of Carlet, Emma Iranzo, Director General of the Department of Agriculture and Guillermo Bravo and Luis Gª Poveda from Befesa were all present at the official opening.

This project which forms part of the National Irrigation Plan and the agreements signed between the irrigation association and the Ministry of Agriculture represent an investment of €4,531,825.40 and have converted 714.21 hectares of land from traditional to drip irrigation. The work carried out by Befesa will benefit 1,200 irrigation users as well as generating water savings of up to 40% which will reduce consumption by more than an estimated 2.4 Hm3 of water per year.

The project included the construction of a new water intake from the Júcar-Túria canal, an irrigation head, two pressurised distribution networks, an 11,600 m3 control reservoir, automation of the whole system via GPRS and electrification of the irrigation head. The network also has a complete system of automated processes that will control the opening and closing of the hydrants, the water volume consumed, the operation of the pumps and the valves as well as pressure measurement.
