Befesa to enlarge Alcoy treatment plant so that the local industries can utilize the water in their processes

Madrid, October 24, 2006. - Befesa Medio Ambiente, the parent company of Abengoa's environmental services business unit, has been awarded a contract, under a JV (Joint Venture) with S.A.U. Ocide Construcción, by the Public Wastewater Treatment Body of the Regional Government of Valencia, to execute the tertiary treatment construction works at Alcoy Wastewater Treatment Plant (Alicante). This contract, for more than 10 million euro, will allow the water to be reutilized for industrial purposes.

The array of textile industries in the municipalities of Alcoy and Concentaina require water resources for their industrial processes, of which some 15,000 m3/day will be obtained thanks to the works Befesa will execute at the existing treatment plant. This treatment process will allow the water to be treated to a greater degree so that it may be reutilized for irrigation or for industrial processes, as in this case.

The project will also include filtration through membrane bioreactors and subsequent disinfection, pumping of the water from the treatment plant to the industrial estate, the construction of an 11,920 m3 capacity concrete storage tank, the pipeline from the storage tank to the municipality of Concentaina, the drive from this municipality to Castelar, where three tanks capable of storing 10,000 m3 will be constructed.

According to Befesa's chairman and chief executive officer, Javier Molina, "these works will provide the textile industries in the area with the water they require for the correct execution of their industrial processes, while the project also consolidates Befesa's position as regards the execution of works related to the integral water cycle."
