Befesa will channel the wastewaters from Huelva Port

Madrid, June 27, 2006. - The Port Authority of Huelva has awarded the Joint Venture formed by Codesa and Befesa Construcción y Tecnología Ambiental the contract to execute the works required to channel the sewage generated in the recently rearranged Port Authority industrial estates, Villafria I and II, and in the outer port areas of Huelva and Punta del Sebo. The wastewaters will be driven to Huelva Sewage Treatment works (STW), located beside the river Tinto and run by the Municipal Water Company, Emahsa.

The project, valued at more than three million euro, includes the construction of the discharge mains and two pumping stations that will drive the wastewaters through the three sections the mains consist of. The first of these two pumping stations will be in Punta del Sebo, a heavily industrialized area due to the presence of the Huelva chemical Pole. This station will drive the contaminated waters collected by the secondary sewage system in this area to the second pumping station, which will be located at the intermediate point, and from where the same will be pumped, together with the wastewaters from Palos de la Frontera, to the STW.

The 8,300 meters of sewage mains will run mostly through lands that cannot be urbanized, where there is little or no vegetation. Use will always be made of the existing infrastructures such as bridges or walls whenever the mains is above ground, in order to reduce, in as far as possible, visual and environmental impacts.

According to Befesa's Chairman, Javier Molina, "with this new contract the company strengthens its presence in the integral water management sector in the province. We are most satisfied that the Huelva Port Authority has put its trust in Befesa to ensure that the wastewaters are unitarily channeled once and for all and that they reach the treatment works without coming into contact with the environment" Molina added.
