Befesa awarded seawater drive works for industrial use in Morocco

Madrid, June 19, 2006. - The company Maroc Phosphore has awarded the Befesa-Staip consortium the contract, valued at more than 12 million euro, to construct the canal to transport 75,000 cubic meters of seawater to feed the cooling system and the other services of the new phosphoric acid production lines at its manufacturing complex in Jorf-Lasfar, a locality on the Atlantic Coast of Morocco about 150 km south of Casablanca.

This phosphoric acid production unit at the Jorf-Lasfar complex produces more than three million tons of products derived from the phosphates from Khourigba, one of the three large extraction areas in Morocco, a country in which approximately three quarters of the world's phosphate reserves are to be found.

Befesa's Chairman, Javier Molina, stressed "Befesa's environmental contribution to the project through the construction of the infrastructures required to drive the seawater to meet the needs of the complex and which will also allow the phosphoric acid production lines to be fed".

The project includes, in addition to the canal, a pumping station and the pipeline network to distribute the water from the pumping station to the production lines.

Befesa will execute the project, and supply and install the electromechanical equipment.
