Integral Agricultural Plastic Waste Management for the Municipalities of Costa Tropical de Granada - Informative Session

On February 22, at a ceremony chaired by the Head of the Presidency Cabinet of the Pool of Municipalities, Antonio Perez; attended by the mayors and environment councilors from the towns of Motril, Vélez de Benaudalla, Carchuna, Castell de Ferro, Albondón, Albuñol, Polopos and Rubite; and by representatives from the SUW Consortium of Granada Province (Resur) and the area's main agricultural companies, Befesa Plásticos presented its Activity Report for the 2005 Campaign and its Planning for 2006, in relation to the Collaboration Agreement signed in November 2004, between the Pool of Municipalities and Befesa Plásticos, under which the latter took on responsibility for the integral management of the plastic sheeting generated by the agricultural sector (mainly greenhouse activities) of the municipalities in the Pool.

As the most significant information, we would mention that in the first year in which this service has been provided, some 800 tons of waste were managed, of which 90 percent was recycled at Befesa Plásticos's plant. An overall surface area in excess of 330 square kilometers was involved. More than 2,000 man/hours were dedicated the collection, conditioning and packaging; and five direct jobs were generated.

We expect to manage, in the 2006 campaign, in the region of 1,500 tons of plastic waste, and for this purpose we have a greater number and better operative means at our disposal, with a third collection truck being brought into operation and the acquisition of another press truck being of note. In addition, there will be three more clean points: Carchuna, El Pozuelo and Vélez de Benaudalla, to be added to the four that are already operational in Motril, Castell de Ferro, Polopos and Albuñol.

The General Manager for Corporate Planning and Development, Alfredo Velasco, thanked the representatives of the public enterprises that are participating in this project for the support received, and then handed over to Luis Luengo and Jose Maria Campuzano, who presented the Activity Report. The event concluded with an informal lunch attended by all the participants.
