Befesa awarded a new drinking water supply contract for several Barcelona municipalities

Madrid, February 23, 2006.- Befesa Medio Ambiente, the holding company for Abengoa's environmental services businesses, will invest, in a Joint Venture with Emcofa, more than four million euro to resolve the water supply problem of the Barcelona municipalities of Sallent Avinyó, Artés and Calders, and the villages in the Morisco mountain range. The objective of the works is to draw off water from the river Llobregat, make it drinkable and subsequently distribute it.

The water supply in this area is currently of a low quality, with low flow and pressure levels and a high degree of salinity due to the presence in the area of potasium mines that accentuate the pollution problem. The project, developed by Befesa, includes the construction of a drinking water plant, four pumping stations and two reservoirs, and will contribute to the resolving of all these problems.

Mr. Javier Molina, Befesa's chairman, says "with these works, Befesa will provide a service for a population of more than 11,000 - providing higher-quality water - and, at the same time, will contribute to the sustainable development of an area that, up until now, was lacking in infrastructures of this type".
