Befesa has been awarded the construction of two hydroelectric plants in Madrid

Madrid, 23 January 2006. Befesa Medio Ambiente, head of Environmental Services for the Abengoa group, has been awarded the contract to construct two hydroelectric plants for the dams at Pedrezuela and Valmayor in Madrid for Canal de Isabel II, valued at four million Euros.

Valmayor and Pedrezuela are two of the reservoirs in Madrid's water supply system that are managed by Canal de Isabel II. Valmayor, with 124.4 cubic hectometre, controls the water from the River Aulencia, but is primarily fed by the Guadarrama, whose water it receives via the "Las Nieves" feeder. Pedrezuela, with 41 cubic hectometre, controls the River Guadalix.

The energy generated from the water that pours into the El Vellón waterway from the Pedrezuela reservoir, as well as the water that enters the Valmayor waterway from the Valmayor reservoir, form part of the second phase of Canal de Isabel II's "Central Hydroelectric Plan". The plan was started in 1989 with the modernisation of the Navallar plant, the restructuring of the Torrelaguna mini-plant and the construction of five new mini-plants in the River Lozoya basin in the Pinilla, Riosequillo, Puentes Viejas, El Villar and El Atazar dams.

Both the Torrelaguna plant and the five in the Lozoya basin were constructed by Abengoa's Water Division during the first half of the 1990s, which currently forms part of Befesa. Ten years later Canal de Isabel II is entrusting the project to the same team.

The two new hydroelectric plants, planned for the base of their respective dams, have been designed with a nominal volume of three cubic metres per second, with a maximum net head of 36.47metres for Pedrezuela and 31.40 for Valmayor. They will have a single Francis turbine linked directly to a synchronised generator in each plant, of 1,100 kilowatts and 965 respectively.

According to Javier Molina, Befesa's chairman, "this project will increase Canal de Isabel II's contribution to electricity production from renewable energy to nearly four million Kwh annually. In addition, Befesa has now constructed 45 hydroelectric power plants under an activity it has been carrying out since its establishment, which represent an installed .capacity of 447 megawatts".

Befesa, Abengoa's Environmental Services subsidiary, focuses on providing environmental services for industry and on the construction of environmental infrastructures. It is a listed company and closed 2004 with a treasury stock of more than 393 million euro. In 2004, Befesa managed a total of 1,374,000 tons of industrial wastes, a twelve percent increase on the previous year (www.befesa.es)
