Befesa completes the Algerri-Balaguer Canal works (Lerida)

On June 22, the Regional Government of Catalonia accepted the works on the "Updated project of the Alguerri-Balaguer canal. Section B", which were executed by Befesa Construcción y Tecnología Ambiental in a Joint Venture with M.J. Grúas, and Voltes. The works, awarded and supervised by Regs de Catalunya (Regsa), a Regional Government-owned company, have required an investment in excess of 14 million euro.

The Alguerri-Balaguer Canal irrigation system draws water from the river Noguera Ribagorçana to irrigate the municipalities of Alguerri, Albesa, Castelló de Farfanya, Menàrguens, Torrelameu, and Balaguer. The overall size of this irrigation area is 7,895 hectares, with a 6,000 cubic meter water supply for each hectare per year. Of the overall irrigation area, 3,455 hectares in the municipalities of Albesa and Algerri had already been executed and the irrigation system was in operation.

As part of the activities to install the irrigation system on the remaining 4,400 hectares, Befesa has executed the prolongation works of section B of the irrigation area’s main canal. It is 7,610 meters long and its transportation capacity is 4.5 meters per second.

The works acceptance ceremony was attended by Antonio Enjuanes, sub-director of the Regional Government’s Department of Agriculture, while Regsa was represented by its director, Ramon Vilalta, who is also president of Riegos del Sistema Segarra Garrigues, its General Manager, Marc Arque, and Xavier Vallosera, head of the works department. The event was also attended by the president of the Algerri-Belaguer User Community, Francisco Mirada. Befesa was represented by Salvador Soler and Lluis Homdedeu.
