Befesa Gestión PCB awarded the contract to remove and treat transformers and other PCB-contaminated equipment in the Autonomous Region of Madrid

In accordance with the management policy and legislation in force on hazardous waste matters, the Local Authorities Madrid have carried out a series of activities to ensure correct management of these wastes and, under the same, Befesa Gestión PCB was awarded the contract to manage, in an environment friendly way, the local authority-owned PCB-contaminated electric equipment stored in the San Fernando de Henares safety deposit.

The works, performed entirely by Befesa personnel in January, consisted of the following phases:

Phase 1: Works at the Madrid Local Authority Facilities

  • Conditioning; identification, numbering, classification and physical location to optimize loading.
  • Sample-taking; samples were taking from all the stored equipment to check their degree of contamination.
  • Analysis: More than two-hundred analyses were performed in Befesa Gestión de Residuos Industriales’s Ajalvir laboratory.
  • Collection and transportation; Befesa Gestión PCB authorizations
  • Facility Cleaning; Cleanup and management of the result thereof

Phase 2: Transformer Decontamination at Center

  • Upon arrival at the Cartagena Center, the transformers were subjected to the usual decontamination process, closed-circuit cleaning with dissolving agent and recovery of the metallic parts.

The totality of the works, involving more than 300 tons of material, was carried out in three weeks. This extraordinary pace was possible thanks to the commitment of all involved in their execution, the field team as well as the Center’s team, and to the efficiency of the carriers and staff of Befesa’s Ajalvir laboratory.
