Repsol Petróleo contracted Befesa to recover the hydrocarbon content from two slop ponds on the Puertollano Industrial Estate

Befesa Tratamientos y Limpiezas Industriales has, over a fifteen-week period, cleaned two hydrocarbon slop ponds with a total waste volume of 5,569 m3, and recovered 2,540 m3 of hydrocarbons and 2,574 m3 of water, and Befesa Gestión de Residuos Industriales treated some 455 metric tons of centrifugation sediments.

The work performed by Befesa Tratamientos y Limpiezas industrials consisted of the management of the waste matter, a mixture of water/hydrocarbons/sediments, in liquid and paste form that was stored in the so-called B-10 ponds.

The waste treatment process employed consisted of three-phase centrifugation with the following objectives:

Recovery of the raw material - hydrocarbons - in the oily wastes, for reuse by the refinery.

Separation of the water content in the waste with sufficient quality to be discharged and treated in the effluents plant.

Guarantee the correct end-management of the wastes from the hydrocarbons and water recovery processes, the non-centrifugable bottom sludge and the contaminated solids in each pond.

Each of the ponds to be cleaned contained approximately 2,300 m3 of sludge. Work commenced on June 28 and was completed in fifteen weeks.

The mobile centrifugation unit sent to carry out the works recovered approximately 2,540 m3 of hydrocarbons and 2,574 m3 of water, and Befesa Gestión de Residuos Industriales treated some 455 metric tons of centrifugation sediments.
