New waste treatment plant begins operations in Chile´s north region

On May 12, the regional sanitary authority of Chile granted Soluciones Ambientales del Norte, a subsidiary of Befesa Chile, the operating permit for its hazardous and non-hazardous waste treatment plant.

The plant, located on a 40 hectare site in the Atacama dessert, one of the world’s most arid regions, is 120 kilometers from the city of Antofagasta and 1,600 kilometers from the capital Santiago. The construction of the facility was executed by Abengoa Chile.

The facility has one of the most modern laboratory in the region, equipped with, among others, a gas chromatograph, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, plasma emission spectrophotometer, and a TOC analyzer.

The estimated waste reception flow is 53,700 tons per year (at full capacity), of which some 43,200 tons will be hazardous solid industrial waste, and 10,500 tons non-hazardous solid industrial waste. Not all these wastes will end up in the safety dump, as a waste manager license condition, the main focus will be on minimization, valorization and recycling of the industrial wastes. It’s estimated that approximately 70 percent of the hazardous wastes will ending up in the safety dump and about 80 percent of the non-hazardous wastes will be kept of in the non-hazardous dump. In any event, considering the aforementioned reception flow and the areas occupied by these dumps and their depth, the plant’s useful life is deemed at 45 years.

The plant received its first 150 tons of inert soil from a railway company on May 26 and an important contract has been signed with the Swiss multinational Xstrata Copper to treat 3,000 tons of wastes from its Lomas Bayas mining site, located about 5 kilometers from the plant.

Soluciones Ambientales del Norte provides solutions for industrial waste management services that meet social responsibility requirements of contributing to the creation of a sustainable world.
