Befesa inaugurates Torija urban waste plant, in Guadalajara

Last October, Befesa, through Befesa Construcción y Tecnología Ambiental, inaugurated the new urban waste treatment plant at Torija, in the province of Guadalajara. This facility completes the regional infrastructure network contemplated in the Castilla-La Mancha Urban Waste Plan.

With a total investment of almost ten million euro, the facility construction and subsequent 15-year, extendible for five-year periods up to a total of fifty years, operation project was awarded by the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha to the Befesa-Egmasa Joint Venture.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by the councilor for the Environment, Rosario Arévalo, accompanied by the general manager for Environmental Quality, Mariano Martínez, and other public representatives.

The facility, consisting of a classification and composting plant, a disposal site for rejected matter and an eco-park, is equipped with all the new technological and operational developments required to offer optimum service.

Torija treatment facility receives 85% of the urban waste produced in the province of Guadalajara, and will treat approximately 80,300 metric tons of urban wastes a year. The facility is currently receiving waste from the municipality of Guadalajara, and from the districts of La Vega del Henares, Marchamalo and La Alcarria Alta.

The project will be completed when the six transfer stations foreseen in the Castilla-La Mancha Urban Waste Plan for the province of Guadalajara, come into operation; four are at the construction phase, and have been awarded to the Befesa-Egmasa Joint Venture, in the municipal districts of Yebra, Cifuentes, Sigüenza and Molina de Aragon; the other two, in Quer and Cogolludo, have yet to be set for tender.

With the opening of the plant, Guadalajara will reduce the damage from wastes which up until now accumulated in authorized or uncontrolled disposal sites. The Torija facility will enable more than 80% of the wastes to be recovered, many of which, such as cardboard and metals, will be recycled.
