Aguas del Ter de Llobregat awards Befesa the contract for the Sant Celoni–Hostalric branch pipeline works in Barcelona

Madrid, November 6th 2008. Aguas del Ter de Llobregat, the public company owned by the regional government of Catalonia, which is responsible for the upstream supply of water to the city of Barcelona and to eight surrounding districts, has awarded Befesa, in a joint venture with ACSA, the contract for the works of the mains pipeline that will connect the Sant Celoni and the Hostalric branches pipelines, worth more than 26 million euro.

This artery forms part of a series of actions to connect the desalination plant in Tordera with the drinking water plant in Ter de Llobregat, which in the short term will resolve the supply problems of more than 20,000 inhabitants in this area, who will be able to be supplied with water from the drinking water plant in Ter via this pipeline.

In the medium term, this connection will allow the new water resources that are going to supply the two extensions planned for the Tordera desalination plant, to be jointly managed with the existing resources from the River Ter. The potential output from the 80 cubic hectometres per year that could be desalinated, and which would be sufficient for one million people, will be more than enough to regulate the peaks in seasonal demand, as well as allowing underground water to be extracted more rationally.

The awarded project includes the section of pipeline that connects the branch pipeline planned for the town of Sant Celoni, located in the Vallés Oriental district, with the branch pipeline planned for the villages of Hostalric and Sant Feliu de Buixalleu, in the Catalan district of Selva. The total length of the section is 16.7 kilometres.

Javier Molina, Chairman of Befesa, said, "these actions will not only strengthen water supply in Barcelona’s metropolitan area by adding a new resource, but also the supply to other towns that experience supply problems at certain times of the year".
